Feng Shui for the Nursery

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Babies can benefit just as much from Feng Shui as adults—if not more!  If you’re adding a new member to your household, it’s best to create an environment that is warm, nurturing and welcoming.  Transitions are always a bit of a challenge.

Soothing Sounds.  Every baby develops while listening to the sound of his or her mother’s heartbeat.  Be sure to introduce a soothing, steady sound into your child’s sleeping environment to provide continuity.  A ticking clock, or a recording of ocean waves are all good options.  You can get a sound spa at bed, bath and beyond.

Soft Surfaces.   A cushioned rocking chair and well-padded changing table will slow down the energy in the room, shielding baby from jarring noises and sudden movements.

Pleasing Scents.  Babies have a very strong sense of smell.  One of the best ways to make a child’s bassinet or crib a comforting space is to add a dishtowel that the primary caretaker has slept with for about a week.  The scent of the fabric will make it easier for the child to relax and enjoy a peaceful slumber.

Keep Visuals Simple.  Endeavor not to bombard a small child with lots of visuals.  Hanging a mobile over the bed may be too stimulating; it’s better to position such a toy over the changing table.  Paint the room a mellow earth tone to give the nursery an air of stability. Honey, pumpkin, cocoa or dusty rose are all good choices because they are warm and nurturing.  Black and white colors are great for newborns and up to 3 months.

Adapt to Your Child’s Needs.  Pay attention to your child’s personality when making adjustments to your nursery.  A baby that is easily stimulated can draw comfort from a square picture displayed over their crib.  A child that always wants to be held may benefit from a circular shape.  If your infant has a hard time sleeping, display a wavy pattern over his/her crib.  A baby who cries a lot can find comfort from the color green.
Choose the Optimal Crib Placement.  Positioning your baby’s crib so that the child has a clear view of the door will promote good sleep habits.
Pick the Right Bedding.  A fussy baby will benefit from sheets and blankets that are solid, yin colors like blue while an infant who sleeps well may be entranced by sheets that feature a small, repetitive pattern and organic is best.

Create a Nurturing Seating Arrangement.  Place a special chair where the child can be held or cuddled in the nursery.  The ideal spot for this chair is the far right corner, which governs loving relationships.

Childs room is above the garage. If the child’s room is positions directly above the garage and  slightly positioned outside the home the child may feel a little left out and this can lead to behavioral problems. If there are cars coming in and out all the time the fumes are not good for the health of the child.

The first suggestion is change the child’s bedroom to somewhere closers to the parents master bedroom and move the playroom of home office to this room instead. If there are no other options make sure the room has the necessary remedies in place, add earth for grounding for the child and make sure they is a lovely family picture for the child to see across from the bed to really feel like part of the family.

Note:  Remove as much electrical out of the nursery in order to have as little EMF’s as possible (see section on this later).

Creating a sacred Altar

Posted by: | Comments (0)

A personal altar invites us to reconnect with the deeper parts of ourselves. Here’s how to get started.
1. Find a space in your home (inside or outside) where you could fit a small to medium table that is unobtrusive to walking paths or other furniture.
2. Find a small to medium table to put in said space.
3. Find a nice tablecloth to cover said table.
4. Place items that represent what you are building an altar to on the table, which is now your altar.
5. If you use your altar for ceremony, it is a good idea to find a table or desk that has drawers in it to store extra candles and tools.
6. You can place it in the garden, meditation or yoga room; I do not recommend placing it in the bedroom. If it most go in the bedroom place a screen around it.
Whenever you get a new item of a magical nature, such as a crystal, a special feather, shell, a new magical tool, then it is appropriate to pop it on your altar for a while to absorb the energy which is focused there.
Oracle cards are energized by being on an altar, as well as any items related to magical workings.
Intention
first, set an intention. To set the energy of your altar, simply declare or write down your intention – “Abundance Altar” or “Healing Altar” etc. Your home altar is a personal power spot for you where you can continue to grow and deepen your relationship with the divine and yourself. Simply declare your space, this is MY SACRED SPACE. Ask yourself, “if this altar could be about anything, what would it be about?”
Altars have been created from the beginning of time – not only to ask for blessing and connect to the divine, but also to give thanks, make personal magic and to honor those who have come before. Creating an altar CONNECTS the physical world with the spiritual world. It is a physical place for dreams to live and a direct telephone line to the invisible forces that weave through one’s life. An altar grows and changes responding to your life. An altar reminds us to honor and give attention to our inner lives as we develop inner-authority.
• ask for guidance and strength
• offer gratitude, send out blessings
• pray for yourself and others
• meditate
Indoors – if you are planning to set up a formal indoor altar, find a spot in your home where you feel comfortable placing this sacred space. This may be in the corner of a room, on a coffee table or cupboard top or shelf. Be mindful that it should be kept higher if there are small children or animals in the home.
Outdoors – an outdoor altar can be set up on an inverted plant pot, a log, or on an old table top set upon a wooden box – whatever flat surface you can find of a size which suits you. Again be mindful of small children and animals when planning a permanent altar in the garden.
Place similar items on this as for the indoor altar, although you may decide to have more garden-style items, such as a cement statue of a Goddess.
Traveling altar – If you travel and like the comfort of having some of your sacred space with you, you can simply pack up a few ritual items in a small toiletry bag and then set them up in your motel room or other accommodation – items could include a small altar cloth, shell, pine cone, and candles.
An altar can be used in many ways:

to say thank you to the powers that be
to celebrate Mother Nature in all her guises
to seek spiritual wisdom
to honor the ancestors
to offer up struggles
to receive creative inspiration
to dialogue with the deeper part of her being
to honor her body
Keeping the Magic Alive
• Visiting your altar daily
• Changing it around weekly
• Dust and wipe down the area around your altar (and yes, under your altar!)
• change the fabric, pick something fresh and present tense
• pick fresh flowers for your altar (and clean water for the vase)
• maybe a new candle, in a different color than you normally choose
• Place objects and images that feel current. Start with the question: “What wants to be on my altar?”
Altar set-up and Ceremony:
These are helpful guidelines…to just get started, create what FEELS right for you. Blessings.

Open Sacred Space- I look at this step as CALLING in my helpers and Sacred Guardians to create a space of which only Love, Light and Truth are present for me to do my “work”. So, remember that ALL is a part of the Divine but we do want to be working in the light so this step is important. Even though we may be “clearing” things that are may be lower in vibration…we are giving them into the light of the Goddess so she can transform them. She has the power to take ALL and transmute it into Love and Light. Take the time to sit down with a piece of paper if you want to and write out what each direction means to you or take guidelines from my sheet you if you like.
1. Come into your space,
2. Light your candle,
3. Light your incense, or sage from the candle etc,
4. You can start start facing East as is common because it is the direction of beginnings. Then you follow moving sunwise or clockwise. Then after Sacred Space has been made you can sit down to clear yourself and let go of anything you may be holding on to that is less then Love and Light, any heaviness. Check your body…it tells you. Any place feel tight or heavy? Go there and breath it out, take a Black Obsidian and rub on that area while you breath, shout it out, cough it out, cry it out, MAKE NOISE! You may tone it out. WHATEVER FEELS RIGHT DO IT!!! (It can be done without the Obsidian as well.)
5. Then when you feel clear…and only then, as it may take 5 minutes or 50 minutes. This is your journey to learn how to clear and heal yourself!!! It is time!!!
Then when you are centered you focus on the stillness, go into meditation, or begin your prayers, asking etc. Any sacred work you want to undertake can begin at this time. WHEN YOU ARE CENTERED!
Sometimes it is just to clear and get re-centered other times you may need clarity for something, other times you may be needing guidance. You have the ability to get it directly from your higherself from the Divine. Or you may feeling some emotions. These are just needing to be acknowledged and want to be release!!!! Emotions are not meant to stay inside us. Go into a your sacred space or the bathroom…whatever, and let it out.
This is what ceremony, ritual or prayer time is for. (What ever you want to call it.) Clearing our STUFF, re-centering, giving thanks and asking as if it has already come to be, this is the key, giving thanks again!
This is also a good time to do a Tarot reading, a card reading, pull a card for your day etc…just ask simply “What do I need to do or know today”, and pull a card, read it, and set it on your altar. Contemplate it during your day. You will be surprised.

6.Then when you feel complete. Stand up(by the way…you don’t have to sit in lotus position or anything, if you it doesn’t work for you…be flexible for where your body is at and if you feel…sit, lay down, whatever! LISTEN to your needs, do not force.
When you are ready, close space. This can be done many ways. Start with the direction you opened with and then turn counterclockwise etc. Or you can just thank all the energies together as a group.
Also, if you leave your space and forget to close space and you are at work or driving down the road…DON’T freak out!!! There is no time or space so, just bring your awareness back to your space and thank everyone and imagine closing it. And it is done!

8.Blow out your candle and you are complete.

Suggested Items for you altar
Goddess items, angels cards
Symbolic spiritual things, candles, charms, incense, a wand.
Items that represent the 5 elements
Earth – crystals, stones, sand, dirt from a site sacred to you, cornmeal, tobacco,
Wood: flowers, greens
Fire – a candle
Water – purified water, holy water, a seashell
Metal: an item made of metal a statue, singing bowl, bells, a knife.

Our surroundings have a powerful effect on what we attract into our lives. When the energy around us is blocked or unbalanced, our prosperity, health, and relationships can be adversely affected. Feng Shui improvements unblock the flow of positive energy, remove negative influences, and allow you to attract the prosperity and abundance you deserve.
Our Deepest Fear
By Marianne Williamson
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were all meant to shine, as children do.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same
As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
One of the most important principals of Feng Shui is clearing clutter
Throwing out junk and getting rid of things like excess paper, empty boxes, and broken items can go a long way toward energizing your home for prosperity.
This includes
Your car, Your purse, Your garage, The computer inbox, Your desk top

Replace Burned Out Light Bulbs. If your rooms are dark so is your financial future; replace burned out bulbs and brighten your possibilities to attract wealth.

Clean you’re Windows. Windows are the eyes of your home; dirty windows cloud vision but clean windows represent a clear view of the opportunities.

No cracks in the windows this is our view out in the world

Remove Dead Plants. Dead plants symbolize dead energy; replace them with healthy living plants to grow wealth in your life.

Replace Your Desk Chair. If you sit on a broken, stained, or torn desk chair it represents disregard for your work; get a new chair and improve your career outlook.

Repair Broken Mirrors. If you look at a broken mirror you can’t see things smoothly; remove or replace it to reflect a smooth road to prosperity.

Tighten Lose Door Knobs and Handles. If your handles are loose you cannot get a grip on your money: tighten them and wealth will be within you grasped.

Activate Your Power Spots
• Add red color to the West area for 2012 to enhance prosperity
• Add water to the east
• Add red to the Northeast
• Add metal to the North
• Add water to the Northwest
• Add 45lbs of metal to the South east
• Add fire to the South west
• Add wood to the south

The South East Area is associated as the wealth area of your home
• Display your valuable objects in this room to symbolize wealth, such as crystal, valuable collections, fine art.
• Add healthy plants in beautiful pots to symbolize flourishing wealth. If you plants die, replace them immediately with healthy ones to keep your wealth growing.
• Place a picture of statue of Lakshmi the Hindu goddess of wealth in the SE area
.Front Entrance
• Grow red or purple flowers in red ceramic planters during the growing season, since plants and flowers represent abundance.
• Hang a wind chime, flag, or bird feeder to attract chi to your home.
• Clean you’re Front Door. The front door is where all good energy enters your home; a clean door attracts prosperity while a dirty or faded door repels it.

The Kitchen
• Is your kitchen in the prosperity place? Food is associated with wealth in Feng Shui, so display a bowl of oranges or apples on the counter to symbolize prosperity.
• Keep the kitchen scrupulously clean.
• The kitchen is related with the prosperity area of the home very important to clear the clutter
• This includes old, stale foods in the cupboards and refrigerator. It’s also important not to have an excess of stored food, even in the freezer. To encourage prosperity, you have to have room to grow.

• To double prosperity, a mirror or reflective aluminum, may be placed at the back of the stove. This also allows the cook to be in a position to see what is going on behind his/her back thus keeping them in a position of command. It’s particularly important to the honor the cook since they bring chi to the food we eat.

• Do use your oven, an unused stove implies untapped resources or ignored opportunities.

• The stove should be in good operating order; it’s as reflection of what is going on in your life
Dining Room
• Food and guests are associated with wealth.
• Hang a mirror that reflects your dining room table and you will symbolically double your wealth. Keep valuable items like crystal, silver, and china in the room to represent the continuing accumulation of wealth.
The Bathroom
• If you bathroom is located in the center of the home to keep prosperity inside your house the Remedy is Paint the walls red, and place a stone or other earth-type object Place a full-length mirror on the entrance door.
• Keep toilet lids down we don’t want money leaking down the toilet.
• Keep all plumbing in excellent working order. A dripping faucet is your money dripping away.
• Cover all drains to keep the money in your possession. You do not want to accumulate wealth and watch as it drains away.
• Keep bathroom doors closed and have them sparkle.
• add Earth Element or a brown object to represent the Earth Element and symbolically “dry up” the excess water.

Your office Desk positioning & Elements
Set up Your Desk in your Power Position:
• Clear sight of the door, what do you see when you look up from your desk
• Wall at your back.
• See who is entering, security and protection keeps the area in front of the desk clear,
• Avoid placing your desk beside or directly opposite the door. The direct path of the energy flow.
• Avoid situating the desk so that you are facing a wall. The wall acts as a barrier and is confining. If this can not be avoided place a mirror so you can see what going on
• Hang a mountain picture behind your back to give yourself stability and strength.
• If this is not possible, you can restore good Feng Shui by arranging a mirror that gives you a clear view of the door.
• A high-backed black chair indicates power
• Always have items that allow you to feel comfortable around you
• A good combination glare screen/radiation filter to prevent headaches and eyestrain, a comfortable chair that doesn’t squeak comfortable keyboard and arm position, a mouse that fits your hand etc
• Make inviting to come into., Welcoming in good experiences
• Plants: improve the quality clean air, vibrant, no cactus, or dried flowers
• Water: soothing symbolizes opportunity and abundance, moving make sure you love the sounds
• Fire, Light candle, or place a salt lamp
• Rug in the center of your office with earth tones to ground the space
• If you don’t have a view outside from where you sit, hang a plant or a picture of a plant in your line of view to bring the outdoors inside for a calming effect.
Create energy flow: Enter into your home and ask yourself the following questions
What gets in your way? , Where do you flow smoothly? Are any areas blocked off from you? Are you able to open all the doors fully? Are there large piles of clutter?
• Repair broken items
broken energy comes from, well, broken things.
• If it is broken, cracked, chipped and can not be repaired let it go
• If your dishes are chipped, you are eating off of broken energy.
• Keep your clothes, your home, your car and your doors in good working order. What’s broken that is draining your energy?

• Energize your finances
Get a red wallet and checkbook,
• Put your investment and banking account information and statements in red folders,
• Put bills into blue or black folders so they aren’t energized.

Get a the correct color purse or wallet. It attracts money
• What’s in your wallet?
• Old scraps of paper, credit cards for accounts you closed two year ago or for accounts you never use? Remove them
• Don’t have an old torn wallet invest in a new one.
• Be sure your wallet is clean, neat, and organized.

Create a vision Board showing all your abundance for 2012

Write an affirmation on your abundance for 2012 and place in the South East area of your home
Live generously. Money is a form of energy, and it needs to flow through your life, not just into it. Living generously within your means makes space for even greater abundance. If you don’t yet have ample money to share, give as generously as you can of your time, energy, compassion, and appreciation.
Express your gratitude The more you notice, appreciate, and express gratitude for blessings received, no matter how small, the more good things will come your way, including money.

Home truly is where the heart is. That’s why it’s so important that your home is nurturing, supportive, safe and makes you feel like you’re getting a great big hug when you walk in the door. No matter what’s going on in the world outside, once you step inside you should be completely relaxed and able to connect body, mind and spirit. When you implement changes in your home, you will notice that your life is also transformed instantly, dramatically and permanently.

The Solar Year begins February 4, 2012 at 6:40 PM; and with it the transition from Metal Rabbit to Water Dragon.

The numerology for 2012 is a 5-year, which means action, movement and change! Expect lots of inner and outer changes in the next 12 months, especially once you integrate the elements of feng shui into your home. A year like this is also excellent for personal transformation and releasing any old patterns that are no longer serving you.

Make a fresh start and take a first step by releasing clutter to make room for new abundance. And most importantly, don’t forget to do something loving and nurturing for YOU daily. Yoga, self massage, a walk in nature, healthy eating and connecting with the people you love are key for balance and prosperity in 2012.

Some Suggestions to Implement for 2012
Create a Vision Board Collage for the year 2012. Start with images that express what you want to “manifest” during the year. Consider the areas of love, joy, vibrant health and empowerment, then create a collage that makes your heart sing every time you look at it. Keep it somewhere that you’ll see each day and that’s private just for you.
Clear the clutter from your home. One of the most important things you can do for your finances is simply to clean up clutter! Throwing out junk and getting rid of things like excess paper, empty boxes and broken items can go a long way toward energizing your home for prosperity. This includes your car, your purse, your garage, your computer’s inbox and even your desk top.

Create an altar to reconnect with the deeper parts of ourselves.

Clear out the old and welcome in the new energies. Cleanse the energy in your home by burning sage, ringing bells, singing and opening windows and doors. Start at the front door and work clockwise around your home, getting into all the corners, nooks and crannies with either the sage or bells.

Express your gratitude for your home. The energy you give to it is the energy you will receive from it. The more you notice, appreciate and express gratitude for blessings received (no matter how small), the more good things will come your way, including money. Start a gratitude journal to track your daily thanks.

Clean your Front Door. The front door is where all good energy enters your home; a clean door attracts prosperity while a dirty or faded door repels it.

Replace burned out light bulbs. If your rooms are dark so is your financial future. Replace burned out bulbs and brighten your possibilities to attract wealth.

Clean your Windows. Windows are the eyes of your home; dirty windows cloud vision but clean windows represent a clear view of the opportunities. Windows are truly your view to the world so also repair all cracks and broken panes.

Remove Dead Plants. Dead plants symbolize dead energy. Replace them with healthy, living plants to grow wealth in your life.

Repair broken mirrors. If you look at a broken mirror you can’t see things smoothly or clearly. Remove or replace it to reflect a smooth road to prosperity.

Tighten loose door knobs and handles. If your handles are loose you cannot get a grip on your money. Tighten them and wealth will be within your grasp.

Add artwork. Being surrounded by artwork you love and things that inspire you will enter your subconscious all day. Art is also an excellent way to help create the symbols and images needed to help attract positive energy.

Important Reminders for 2012:
Do something loving and nurturing for YOU!—Daily! Self massage, yoga, walk in nature, eat healthy, connect with the people you love!
Create a Vision Board and place somewhere that you see daily that is private for you.
Write an affirmation in each of the sections of your home; write in present tense and all positive.
Cleanse and protect your energy daily using visualizing white light all around you or the violet flame.
Cleanse the Energy in your home with sage, bells, singing, opening the windows and doors
Live generously.
Express your gratitude.
Energize your finances: Get a red purse or wallet; it attracts money.
Daily Affirmations
I attract loving, beautiful people into my life.
I always deserve love.
I am attracting loving relationships into my life.
I project love to everyone I meet.
I love and approve of myself.
I express love freely.
As I give love; I am instantly supplied with more.

People are just waiting to love me, and I allow them.
Love radiates from me at all times.

That purpose of the living room is the part of the home that the entire family can enjoy; it is also the room where you can entertain guests.

The living room is meant to be a place where people connect and spend time with each other. In that respect, the colors, furniture placement and decor should be used in a way that reflects togetherness and family.

Living rooms or Family rooms are generally the most public areas in the home, so it is important that the chi or energy is well balanced.

It is important that the living room should invite people to have good conversation and should make them feel comfortable and relaxed in it.

Placement of your furniture is important. It is best to place your heaviest pieces a couple of inches from the solid walls.

Your furniture should not overwhelm the room. Furniture piece’s that are too heavy for your room will decidedly interrupt the flow of Chi.

Arrange your sofa and chairs to form either an octagon or rounded shape, creating a hug shape with all the seating, supports connection and intimacy and relaxation.

Identify what the focal point of the room is maybe the view, fireplace, television and then create the seating around the focal point

If possible the main seating location should be able to see the door, or at least never with their backs towards it. It’s best if the main seating everyone is able to see the door from where they are sitting without having to turn for it this way they can relax, allow their nervous system to relax and enjoy conversation more.

Best not to arrange chairs face to face, a slight angle is recommended. People feel more comfortable this way.

Re-arrange your furniture so the pieces are not directly under heavy beams, especially if this is your main family room this gives feelings of oppression.

A living room is considered more yang in nature, so adding soft cushions and rounded furniture shapes well add a touch of yin and softness to the room.

The coffee table should be tidy and invite people to sit at it. Round or oval is best for energy flow and people will not hurt themselves on the corners. Place natural flowers or plants on it.

If the television is not important to you and your family if possible, place it in an armoire which has doors that can usually be closed when not in use. You can also get art work to place over the television that just slides across when you want to watch television.

By adding fresh leafy green plants will help in balancing the energy of the space.

Corners or dark areas should be lit up through the use or combination of clear colors, plants, mirrors or light. Earth tones is a great color for the living room its grounding and centering.

Mirrors are an important element to have into account in a feng shui living room. A mirror strategically placed can have many advantages; it can bring more light to a specific spot or reflect a symbolic element in it. It can also make the room look wider and can be used to reflect the door allowing to see it from a chosen spot.

Lights are a wonderful cure for corners of the living room and dark areas. Other great additions include pieces of artwork, live plants, family photographs and feng shui mirrors if used appropriately.

Living rooms should be free of clutter. Remove anything that does not belong in the living room and keep it as spacious as possible.

Great room to have your family portrait hung.

Sleep and Longevity
By Kulreet Chaudhary, M.D.
Getting a good night’s sleep is an effortless technique to create longevity and health. Deep rest during the night helps you fight stress, maintain a healthy weight, and keeps your energy levels high. Timing your sleep is like timing an investment in the stock market – it doesn’t matter how much you invest, it matters when you invest.

The deepest and most regenerative sleep occurs between 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. After 2am, your sleep becomes more superficial. If you are not getting the deep, regenerative sleep that occurs between 10 p.m. – 2 a.m., then you may wake up between 2 a.m. – 3 a.m., when the sleep cycle naturally becomes more superficial, and have trouble falling back to sleep. If your body is chronically deprived of the regenerative sleep between 10 p.m. – 2 a.m., then you may still feel fatigued when you wake up in the morning.

You have an internal clock lodged deep within the brain that regulates your sleep – the pineal gland. The pineal gland receives information about the sun through your eyes via the optic nerve. As the sun sets, the pineal gland is able to sense the change in light transmitted through your eyes and it begins to secrete a hormone, melatonin, to prepare your body for sleep.

Exposure to bright light prevents the secretion of melatonin and darkness promotes it. Typically, within one to two hours after the sunset, you will begin to feel drowsy as the melatonin levels rise. This is the body’s signal to go to sleep. By midnight your melatonin levels have peaked and there is a gradual decline in melatonin levels after midnight.

At 10 p.m., your body goes through a transformation following the rise in melatonin production. This transformational phase of sleep is associated with an increase in the “internal” metabolic activity that is responsible for the repair and restoration of your body. A reduction of your mental and physical activity is necessary for this 10 p.m. shift to occur. If you are still awake, the “second wind” phenomenon occurs at 10 p.m. because there is a rise in mental activity and energy at this time. However, the true value of the “second wind” can only be experienced if you are asleep by 10 p.m.

Scientists are just beginning to discover the antioxidant role of melatonin. Your body produces numerous natural antioxidants that prevent cellular and DNA damage, which ultimately causes disease. One of the powerful nocturnal antioxidants produced is melatonin. As you sleep, your body is removing the effects of free radicals that have been produced by stress throughout the day. This natural, nocturnal clean-up crew maintains physical balance without any effort. All you need to do to benefit from this process is to sleep when your pineal gland sends the melatonin signal.

If you are awake past 10 p.m., this process of free radical removal becomes interrupted, and your body’s ability to remove the effects of free radicals is significantly impaired. First of all, most people who stay awake past 10 p.m. are usually working on the computer, watching TV or reading. All of these activities result in an exposure to light and therefore interrupt the production of melatonin. Secondly, the metabolic energy that becomes available at 10 p.m. for the removal of free radicals is expended and now unavailable. It gets dissipated in the “second wind” phenomenon and is lost as mental energy rather than used as metabolic energy for the purpose of removing free radicals. So rather than allowing our bodies to maximize its natural cycle of repair during sleep, we interfere with it. This results in a state of night vigilance where you are alert during the night and groggy during the day. This cycle is extremely harmful to health.

Typically, if you miss the 10 p.m. bedtime, it will take much longer to fall asleep. The quality of sleep will also be less refreshing and there will still be a sense of fatigue in the morning. Even adjusting your bedtime from 11 p.m. to 10 p.m. will make an enormous difference in the quality of your sleep and enhance your feeling of wakefulness the following day. The reason for this is that you are taking advantage of the natural wave of neurochemistry that is already well on its way before 10pm and you get the added support of the metabolic changes that occur at the 10 p.m. mark.

If you are currently falling asleep well past 10 p.m., make it a goal to sleep earlier by 15-30 minutes each week until you hit the 10 p.m. goal. If you are also waking up after 6 a.m., it is important to wake up 15-30 minutes earlier so you feel ready for bed by 10 p.m. If you are having problems with insomnia, there are several things you can do to help reset your sleep cycle:

1. Do not watch TV or work on the computer later than 9 p.m. (ideally 8 p.m.). Both of these activities are stimulating to the mind and significantly impair the secretion of melatonin due to the strong light they emit.

2. Remove the TV from your bedroom. The environment of the bedroom should reflect the activities taking place there – sleep, relaxation and sexual intercourse. Having a TV in the bedroom is counterproductive to all of these activities. Although many people look to television as a way of relaxing, from a neurochemical standpoint, it has a stimulating effect.

3. Watch the sunset daily. Even if you are able to only take a 10-minute walk as the sun is setting, this is a very powerful way to enhance melatonin secretion. Once you are waking up earlier, also watch the first 10 minutes of the sunrise. Your brain is able to differentiate between the setting and rising rays of the sun and initiates a chain of biochemical reactions to support your natural daily cycles. An easy way to prevent jet lag is to watch the sunset and sunrise for the first 24-48 hours in your new destination.

4. Stop drinking caffeine. Caffeine disrupts your natural sleep cycle. Even drinking caffeine in the morning interrupts your sleep because, over time, it causes a chemical shift towards a state of excitation. Caffeine taken in the second half of the day is an even bigger obstacle to deep sleep during the night. Stopping caffeine abruptly can be quite stressful to the nervous system so slowly taper off your caffeine gradually over 4-8 weeks.

5. Eat a small dinner. You now know that your digestion gets weaker as the day progresses. Eating a large dinner interrupts your ability to fall asleep because your body is contending between two different processes – preparing for sleep and restoration versus managing the undigested food in your stomach.

6. Avoid naps during the day until you are able to fall asleep before 10 p.m. If you still need a nap during the day even though you have adjusted your bedtime to before 10 p.m., then a brief nap is okay. If this is predominantly happening after meals, then you need to work on strengthening your digestion. Once your digestion is stronger, you will not feel tired after meals.

7. If you have problems with frequent urination at night, do not drink any liquids after 7 p.m. The liquids you drink are typically processed by the kidneys are ready for excretion within 90 minutes.

8. If you are still having problems sleeping after all of the above recommendations, then you can make an evening milk drink that will aide your sleep: Pour one cup of milk (soy, almond or other milk substitutes are okay for those who do not consume cow’s milk) into a pan and add a pinch of each of the following ingredients: turmeric powder, nutmeg powder and cardamom powder. Add natural sugar if desired for taste.

I have another amazing Quinoa dish to share with you I got it from the Gluten Free Goddess blog spot, they have lots of other amazing dishes check it out

Red Quinoa with Roasted Butternut Squash, Cranberries and Pecans

I find red quinoa is a tad crunchier than the usual quinoa I cook, so I add a bit more water to make it softer. If you like your quinoa al dente, use a grain to liquid ratio of 1:2 with red quinoa. If you prefer it a little softer, add another 1/4 cup water. See more at: How to Cook Quinoa the Easy Way.

You’ll need:

1 cup red quinoa

Cook the red quinoa in a rice cooker, using a 1:2 ratio of 1 cup red quinoa to 2 cups water. As mentioned above, if you like it softer, add an additional 1/4 cup water. If you don’t have a rice cooker, cook the quinoa on the stove in a pot, according to package directions.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

In a medium roasting pan add:

1 smallish butternut squash, peeled and diced
1/2 cup fresh or frozen cranberries, halved or chopped as you prefer
1/2 of a medium red onion, diced fine
1 clove of garlic, minced

Drizzle the butternut squash, cranberries, onion and garlic with a little olive oil, to coat. Add a teaspoon or two of pure maple syrup- not too much. Sprinkle with sea salt. Toss everything together. Roast in the top half of the oven until the squash is tender- about 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the pan and set aside.

In a large dry skillet, add:

1/2 cup chopped pecans

Heat the skillet and lightly toast the pecans briefly, till fragrant.

Add in the cooked quinoa and the butternut mixture.

Add:

2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley
A sprinkle of cumin, ginger or curry, to taste
Sea salt and ground pepper, to taste

Drizzle the quinoa mixture with some fruity extra virgin olive oil and toss to coat. Taste test and adjust seasonings. Heat through gently.

Serve.

Makes 4 servings.
