Home truly is where the heart is. That’s why it’s so important that your home is nurturing, supportive, safe and makes you feel like you’re getting a great big hug when you walk in the door. No matter what’s going on in the world outside, once you step inside you should be completely relaxed and able to connect body, mind and spirit. When you implement changes in your home, you will notice that your life is also transformed instantly, dramatically and permanently.

The Solar Year begins February 4, 2014 ; and with it the transition from the slow moving Water Snake to the wood Horse representing freedom, movement, love and success

The Wood Horse year represents a time of triumph, spontaneous adventure, academic achievement,  business success and romance. It is an excellent year for travel. Horse year is about freedom, movement, returning to nature, and enjoying life. Energy is high and all your work will be rewarded. Its important to act fast in a Horse year. Make the decisions that you have been holding off on. If you are not feeling 100% confident about decision, then don’t do it. Overspending is easy in a Horse year so be mindful with that. The Horse year, it’s easy to make decisions to fast, make sure to take sometime to reflect before making decisions.

Horse have reins for a reason…if you feel the need to gently pull on the reins to slow down please know that you have the choice and power to do so. Take some time out in nature and slow down when needed and before its needed, don’t wait to fall off the horse before doing so.

The horse year is considered a fortunate year. The Magical Horse has supernatural powers, think of unicorns, Pegasus. The Chinese horse has its presence on the ground and is a helper to man, being of service. How do you plan to be of service this year of the horse? How would you like to give back?

The horse supports humans with his strength and also carries human development, progress and migrations as well as supporting thousands of years of trade and growth. It represents wealth. If you had horses you were wealthy. Every culture used horses or ponies.

The horse was also a sign of power. The horse is a powerful, strong animal but on the other hand is delicate and vulnerable. They are so deeply intuitive. As you walk up to a horse they are not thinking what you look like, how much money you have….they are feeling into your energy. They can sense kindness, authenticity, peace, strength and confidence. This is a year for you to really step into your most authentic self….as last year was about shedding your skins and this year stepping into the very best YOU!!!

Some Suggestions to Implement for 2014

Create a Vision Board Collage for the year 2014. Start with images that express what you want to “manifest” during the year. Consider the areas of love, joy, vibrant health and empowerment, then create a collage that makes your heart sing every time you look at it. Keep it somewhere that you’ll see each day and that’s private just for you.

Clear the clutter from your home. One of the most important things you can do for your finances is simply to clean up clutter! Throwing out junk and getting rid of things like excess paper, empty boxes and broken items can go a long way toward energizing your home for prosperity. This includes your car, your purse, your garage, your computer’s inbox and even your desk top.

Create an altar to reconnect with the deeper parts of ourselves.

Clear out the old and welcome in the new energies. Cleanse the energy in your home by burning sage, ringing bells, singing and opening windows and doors. Start at the front door and work clockwise around your home, getting into all the corners, nooks and crannies with either the sage or bells.

Express your gratitude for your home. The energy you give to it is the energy you will receive from it. The more you notice, appreciate and express gratitude for blessings received (no matter how small), the more good things will come your way, including money. Start a gratitude journal to track your daily thanks.

Clean your Front Door. The front door is where all good energy enters your home; a clean door attracts prosperity while a dirty or faded door repels it.

Replace burned out light bulbs. If your rooms are dark so is your financial future. Replace burned out bulbs and brighten your possibilities to attract wealth.

Clean your Windows. Windows are the eyes of your home; dirty windows cloud vision but clean windows represent a clear view of the opportunities. Windows are truly your view to the world so also repair all cracks and broken panes.

Remove Dead Plants. Dead plants symbolize dead energy. Replace them with healthy, living plants to grow wealth in your life.

Repair broken mirrors. If you look at a broken mirror you can’t see things smoothly or clearly. Remove or replace it to reflect a smooth road to prosperity.

Tighten loose door knobs and handles. If your handles are loose you cannot get a grip on your money. Tighten them and wealth will be within your grasp.

Add artwork. Being surrounded by artwork you love and things that inspire you will enter your subconscious all day. Art is also an excellent way to help create the symbols and images needed to help attract positive energy.

Create energy flow: Enter into your home and ask yourself the following questions

What gets in your way?

Are any areas blocked off from you?

Are you able to open all the doors fully?

Are there large piles of clutter?

One of the most important principals of Feng Shui is clearing clutter

One of the most important things you can do for your finances is simply to clean up. Throwing out junk and getting rid of things like excess paper, empty boxes, and broken items can go a long way toward energizing your home for prosperity.  In particular, de-clutter your SE corner of your home, of your living room, and of your bedroom.  This is the wealth sector and if it has piles of junk, then financial chi can’t circulate.

This includes, Your car, purse, garage, computer inbox, desk top

  • Clean you’re Front Door.
  • Replace Burned Out Light Bulbs.
    Clean you’re Windows.
  • Remove Dead Plants
  • Repair Broken Mirrors
Tighten Lose Door Knobs and Handles.

Feng Shui for Love and the bedroom

  • Remove clutter Eliminate the old to bring in the new.
  • No TV or Exercise Equipment!
  • Always have things in pairs
  • Check the statues and art in your home
  • Bed placement
  • Soothing Colors – Colors on your walls, bedding and window treatments can help create serenity in your home. Switch to light green, blue, lavender, peach, pink or neutral tones for peaceful energy.
  • Full spectrum lighting is the best lighting to have especially in the office.
  • Water features are great for creating a relaxing atmosphere, this year they should be placed in the east.
  • Plants: Greenery is always a welcome sight. Have as many plants as you possibly can in your home. Ensure however that they look healthy. Cactus and dried flowers are not recommended.
  • Sound: Play relaxing music
  • Photos: Have many happy images of your family throughout the house, especially in the kitchen/dining, family room.
  • Art Work: Have art work that you love and things that inspire you, it is very useful because they are going into the subconscious all day.
  • Remove Energy Stimulants – You’ll want to avoid gadgets, big and small, that send out powerful electromagnetic energy causing many sleep and health issues.

Create A Sleep Ritual – There are many different types of rituals that will help your body wind down for a harmonious night’s sleep. You may want to spend a couple minutes writing your worries down or anything you must remember for the next day so your mind can let go of the anxiety. Other suggestions include drinking herbal tea, meditating, doing gentle yoga, taking a walk, writing in a gratitude journal or taking a warm bath.

For a Childs bedroom

A mirror at the foot of anyone’s bed is not advisable, but it is especially important for a child.

Bunk beds are not advisable for children.

Try not to have heavy furniture in the bedroom, or bookcases or shelves that seem to take over the room. Less is more in a child’s room if possible.

Be careful of what is hanging from the ceiling in the center of a child’s room.

De clutter the child’s bedroom as much as possible

Improve the health of your child by placing live green plants in the bedroom.

As I follow my bliss, my bliss starts chasing me!

Today and every day my bliss is my compass for success and happiness.

I do what I love and find my bliss. I keep doing what I love and I live my bliss. I give myself completely to what I love and I become my bliss!

Bliss builds in my world today with every conscious decision I make!

Today I find my bliss in the sweet spot where my talents and my passion merge.

I am a bliss magnet!

I follow my bliss! I experience my bliss! I become my bliss!

Feng Shui holiday tips to reduce stress and increase joy 2013

 Positioning of the Christmas tree

Do not place the tree where it will interfere with either a walkway or the energy flow of your home.

The best area for the Christmas tree to be placed is the North East, South or the East area of the home or in that location of the main room. It is important that the tree is placed where the family gathers to support bringing everyone together.

This year the area to avoid placing the tree is the Center  or the Southwest, we do not want to the elements of wood or fire. The tree is wood and the lights are the fire element.

It’s nice to arrange a special evening with the family to put the tree up together.

The Pine tree symbolizes a long and healthy life, (I recommend a Living Christmas Tree Company) you rent your tree in a pot and return it after Christmas, so much better for the environment.

Make sure the tree is not over cluttered, this represents a cluttered mind on the other hand you do not want it to bare this can give the feeling of lack of abundance.

Things to think about when adding ornaments to the tree

Hand made ornaments are beautiful it allows you to bring in your personal touch and once again it could be something that the entire family gathers and makes together.

Angels represents peace and love

Having bells on the tree is good to enhance creativity and enhance memory.

Keep away from any pointy sharp items on the tree or having any decorations that are associated with negative memories.

Adding tinsel to the tree brings in the water element which gets things moving and flowing if things in your life felt a little stuck bring in the water element to get things flowing.

Mistletoe inspires calmness and a peaceful state of mind and most importantly love.

Placing gold colored items on the tree can enhance prosperity.

When decorating the tree make sure it is balanced not too feminine or too masculine especially for those single people out there that would like to enhance romance and relationship.

Make sure the tree is not over cluttered, this represents a cluttered mind on the other hand you do not want it to bare this can give the feeling of lack of abundance.

To spice up your holidays and romance, place two Poinsettia plants – which symbolize love and passion – in the Southwest area of your home, it’s the romance direction. Always have things in pairs to enhance love.

Ways to avoid Christmas stress

Light candles to create a relaxing atmosphere

Burn aromatherapy scents like lavender keep everyone peaceful and relaxed at this time of year.

Clear the clutter in your home; it is one of the main Feng Shui reasons for stress

After Christmas do not feel like you have to keep any gifts unless you love and need them otherwise pass them on to charity or someone that will enjoy them.

The best Christmas gift to give is spending time with your loved ones

Or offer to help out at a homeless shelter.

Color psychology

Be careful an excess of the red color cause over stimulation and anxiety

Bring lots of cooling colors blue, greens for serenity and healing

Promote Feng Shui harmony in the home

Remove sharp knives from being on show in the kitchen.

No cactus front door

Oval dining table improve communication and digestion

Artwork in the home should be soothing and peaceful

Make sure the front door is able to open fully; this is the main mouth of chi where the energy enters your home

Photos: Have many happy images of loved ones

Add a water feature in the east area of your home.

Our surroundings have a powerful effect on what we attract into our lives. When the energy around us is blocked or unbalanced, our prosperity, health, and relationships can be adversely affected. Feng Shui improvements unblock the flow of positive energy, remove negative influences, and allow you to attract the prosperity and abundance you deserve.
Our Deepest Fear
By Marianne Williamson
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were all meant to shine, as children do.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same
As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
One of the most important principals of Feng Shui is clearing clutter
Throwing out junk and getting rid of things like excess paper, empty boxes, and broken items can go a long way toward energizing your home for prosperity.
This includes
Your car, Your purse, Your garage, The computer inbox, Your desk top

Replace Burned Out Light Bulbs. If your rooms are dark so is your financial future; replace burned out bulbs and brighten your possibilities to attract wealth.

Clean you’re Windows. Windows are the eyes of your home; dirty windows cloud vision but clean windows represent a clear view of the opportunities.

No cracks in the windows this is our view out in the world

Remove Dead Plants. Dead plants symbolize dead energy; replace them with healthy living plants to grow wealth in your life.

Replace Your Desk Chair. If you sit on a broken, stained, or torn desk chair it represents disregard for your work; get a new chair and improve your career outlook.

Repair Broken Mirrors. If you look at a broken mirror you can’t see things smoothly; remove or replace it to reflect a smooth road to prosperity.

Get your garden ready as we come into spring
A garden says a great deal to you as you pass it just like inside the home it is also just a reflection. An empty garden shows loneliness and possibly finances are limited, while a garden is overgrown shows your life as overwhelming and busy. Always ask yourself what your garden is saying to you? A garden should create a sense of inner peace. Providing nurturing and support for our lives. The earth is the mother on which the creative power of life is made. The soil, flowers and plants and wildlife are the earth’s gifts for us to honor, cherish and enjoy.
Its nice for the occupants to be able to hear flowing water and birdsong in the garden. These sounds are wonderful to hide the sounds of road traffic other such noises that are not good to hear. The use of herbs in your garden adds color and life; they also contain medicinal properties that have been used for centuries, plant herbs such as basil, Jasmine, lavender and rosemary.
Spending time in your garden brings us closer to the nurturing and healing power of mother nature. It truly is an honor to spend time in the garden and connect with the land and soil as you do send care and love the garden will give that back to you through pure beauty, smells and nourishment. Allow your garden to grow naturally without using chemicals and fertilizers.

Your garden can provide a sacred space for friends and family to gather and connect. The pathways should flow like a meandering stream not a straight road, Avoid dead end paths and complex formations.
Landscaping should be given love regularly not to get overgrown, cover walkways or entry, or shadow the house. Keep the garden well maintained. Always keep garbage cans hidden. Clear clutter from garden sheds and have the necessary shelving to keep all the tools and equipment organized.

Balance the five elements fire, earth, water, wood, and metal into the landscaping that harmonizes and balances your garden. Choose plants that are plentiful and look rich and vibrant. Great colors are plants with red, purple and royal blue flowers. Plant flowers with soft leaves, and avoid plants with thorns, spines or pointy leaves especially by the front entrance area this will keep away the positive energy.

Invite wildlife to your garden by adding birdbaths, fountains and bird feeders. Consider planting flowers which attract humming birds and butterflies and keep artificial birds, wildlife and butterflies to a bare minimum. A water feature is always a great addition; it must be positioned in the correct location for enhancement. The best locations are in the East and Southwest corners. Very important to keep it clean and make sure it flows either in a 360 degree pattern, or towards the house.

We love to have trees in the garden however make sure they are not placed in a direct line with any entrances, especially the main entrance this will block the energy from entering your home. Try to keep a balance of yin and yang (dark and light) when thinking of the trees. Avoid trees that will completely block the light. Too much of anything is not good. Again, balance is the key. Have a beautiful view from every window and door this gives a feeling of pure abundance and joy
Your garden can be a perfect retreat for you to enjoy it.

The Solar Year begins February 4, 2012 at 6:40 PM; and with it the transition from Metal Rabbit to Water Dragon.

The numerology for 2012 is a 5-year, which means action, movement and change! Expect lots of inner and outer changes in the next 12 months, especially once you integrate the elements of feng shui into your home. A year like this is also excellent for personal transformation and releasing any old patterns that are no longer serving you.

Make a fresh start and take a first step by releasing clutter to make room for new abundance. And most importantly, don’t forget to do something loving and nurturing for YOU daily. Yoga, self massage, a walk in nature, healthy eating and connecting with the people you love are key for balance and prosperity in 2012.

Some Suggestions to Implement for 2012
Create a Vision Board Collage for the year 2012.

Important Reminders for 2012:
Do something loving and nurturing for YOU!—Daily! Self massage, yoga, walk in nature, eat healthy, connect with the people you love!
Create a Vision Board and place somewhere that you see daily that is private for you.
Write an affirmation in each of the sections of your home; write in present tense and all positive.

Christmas does not have to be a burden on the environment. With a little effort and imagination, we can reduce the environmental impact of the holiday season.
Here are some ideas to help celebrate the season while caring for the earth.

Buy Less
Some holiday gifts fill a practical need and need to be bought new. But many gifts are really gestures of thoughtfulness. You can give more while spending less.

• Not all gifts have to be store-bought.

Before the holiday season begins (Thanksgiving is a good time because the extended family is often together), put the names of all adult family members on separate slips of paper and put the slips in a hat. Take turns picking one name per adult – the name you pick is your gift recipient. Keep your chosen pick a secret, to help maintain an element of surprise.

Your gift list for the adults in your family has just been shortened to one! You can now focus on a special gift for the person whose name you picked, without the difficulty and expense of finding just the right gift for everyone.

Buy Smart – think ‘green’
• look for locally made gifts – many gifts in today’s marketplace come from halfway around the world, and the impact of transportation contributes significantly to greenhouse emissions and global warming. Local craft fairs and artisan shops are a good source for gifts that come without the added costs of transportation.
• choose gifts made from recycled sources – many individuals and small businesses have developed great products using recycled materials. Supporting these businesses helps reduce the waste stream while promoting the concept of making best use of available materials.
• give ‘battery-free’ gifts – According to the EPA, about 40% of all battery sales occur during the holiday season. Discarded batteries are an environmental hazard. Even rechargeable batteries find their way into the waste stream eventually. Here are a few examples of gifts that have less of an impact on the environment: Naturally-powered toys
• avoid children’s toys that promote violence – there is too much violence in the world, and the new wave of video games for children is disturbing. Remember the theme of Christmas is “Peace on Earth”. There are many toys and games that are fun, and nurture childrens creativity and sense of active play.
• ‘re-gifting’ is OK – there is much discussion about etiquette behind the trend to ‘re-gift’, that is, to pass on a gift you received but do not need.

“A great way to teach children the spirit of giving (and simplifying) during the holidays is to ask them to pick 3 toys that they don’t play with very much, and donate them to a homeless shelter, domestic violence shelter etc

Connect with Nature
Christmas is a time for giving, and a time for family. What a great opportunity to start a family tradition of giving back to the earth and instilling the values of sustainable living to your children, friends and community. Start an annual, earth-friendly Christmas family tradition! It will also get you outdoors for a few hours to build an appetite for the big dinner.

Family nature hike – a peaceful walk through nature on Christmas day will be remembered and valued. Nature restoration activity – planting a small tree together symbolizes the value of nature and offsets the ‘taking’ of the Christmas tree. An hour spent cleaning up or enhancing a natural area also enriches the giver and acknowledges nature as the source of our well-being.

Decorate a tree for the birds – place seed bells, suet, pine cones with peanut butter and seed trays on any tree in your yard, preferably a tree in the open where cats can be seen easily by the birds. Yo attract a wide variety of birds, use varied seed types such as black oil sunflower seed, wild bird mixed seed and nyger seed bells. This is a great activity for kids, and offers an important food source for birds during the winter.

“Another way to make the Holidays more sustainable is to use a living tree as your Christmas tree.

Lower the impact of holiday lighting

The house with the most lights used to be the ‘best’. Times have changed. The cost of electricity goes way beyond the utility bill. Electricity drains natural resources.

• Reduce the size of outdoor lighting displays – A smaller presentation of lights can still be attractive, and more appropriate in the ‘season of giving’.
• Use LED lights for house and Christmas tree lighting – LED (Light Emitting Diode) holiday lights use up to 95% less energy than larger, traditional holiday bulbs and last up to 100,000 hours when used indoors. LED holiday lights use .04 watts per bulb, 10 times less than mini bulbs and 100 times less than traditional holiday bulbs. Over a 30-day period, lighting 500 traditional holiday lights will cost you about $18.00 while the same number of LED lights costs only $0.19. As an added bonus, if one of the LED lights burns out the rest of the strand will stay lit.
• Outdoor Mini-lights will also save energy. A 100-light string uses only 40 watts. If you’re buying a new set of lights, compare based on equal ‘lighted lengths’. Some higher priced brands have 100 mini-lights for only 8 1/2 feet of length, while some 100 mini-light strings cover up to 40 feet in length. For the most efficient outdoor holiday lighting, consider the new solar LED strings now available.
• Turn tree lights and outdoor house decorative lighting at bedtime. It’s simply a waste of energy to leave the holiday lights on at night after everyone’s gone to sleep.

Remember, never install lights with the power on. Test lights first, then unplug to install.

Choose a live tree
Although plastic Christmas trees are reusable from year to year, real trees are the more sustainable choice. Plastic trees are made of petroleum products (PVC), and use up resources in both the manufacture and shipping. While artificial trees theoretically last forever, research shows that they are typically discarded when repeated use makes them less attractive. Discarded artificial trees are then sent to landfills, where their plastic content makes them last forever.
Live trees, on the other hand, are a renewable resource grown on tree farms, that are replanted regularly. They contribute to air quality while growing, and almost ninety percent are recycled into mulch. Live trees are usually locally grown and sold, saving both transportation costs and added air pollution. Live trees also smell like Christmas! When buying a live tree, consider:

• live potted trees – if you buy a small tree in a large pot, you may be able to reuse the tree for 2- 3 years without having to plant or re-pot the tree.
• re-pot the tree – if the tree is root-bound, you can replant it in a larger pot for several years’ use.
• replant the tree – if you have the space, of course, replanting the tree outdoors is an option. Be sure to anticipate the full-grown size of the tree, and avoid planting near foundations or underground services.
• chip and mulch the tree – many communities now have a free chipping service for trees. If you can keep the chipped material, it makes excellent mulch for your shrub beds.

Homemade Cards
Store-bought Christmas cards are rich, elegant and expensive. They also consume a huge amount of natural resources for a throw-away item. The amount of cards sold in the US during the holiday season would fill a football field 10 stories high, and requires the harvesting of nearly 300,000 trees. Homemade cards may not be as professional, but they are more personal and just as appreciated. Making the cards is also a fun activity for the family.

Childrens’ art work is another good source for Christmas card pictures. Even the ‘scribblings’ of the wee-ones are interesting, fun and especially appropriate for the season. Cut out sections of the artwork which look best, and fit to the required size.

Making your own cards is easy if you have the material to work with. Try to get in the habit of saving pieces of heavy paper (good one side) to use as the backing for your glued-on pictures. “Card stock” is the ideal weight, and even small pieces are worth saving.

Alternatives to Wrapping Paper

Half of the paper America consumes each year is used to wrap and decorate consumer products. (Source: The Recycler’s Handbook, 1990) In the US, the annual trash from gift wrap and shopping bags totals over 4 million tons. In Canada, the annual waste from gift wrap and shopping bags equals about 545,00 tons. If everyone wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or fabric gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

• Use environmentally friendly wrapping paper made using fibers such as hemp. Look for paper using recycled content.
• Avoid buying glossy foil or metallic wrapping paper – this kind of material is difficult to recycle.
• Reuse gift wrap where possible – large wrapped presents usually have large enough uncreased sections to be reused for wrapping small gifts.
• Use tape sparingly, or not at all – if you’re going to use ribbon to finish off your wrapping, you may not need to use tape. By not using tape, more of the wrapping paper can be reclaimed, and it’s easier for the recipient to save the wrapping for reuse.
• Choose alternatives to commercial gift wrap – there are many options which are cost-free, attractive solutions. Gift bags can be made using fabric scraps, or wrapping can be made using comic strips from the paper, old calendars, maps, posters and more. Reuse/Recycle
• Reuse or recycle gift packing materials – Bubble wrap can be stored for reuse, or recycled. Foam packing chips are not as easily recycled; if you don’t want to store this material for reuse, take it to a shipping center like Mailboxes. etc, who will accept it for their own use. Cardboard boxes should be opened flat and set out for recycling; storing and reusing these boxes is even better as no additional energy is used in remanufacturing.
• Save any special gift wrap, ribbons and bows – When unwrapping large gifts, save the paper for reuse; it can often be cut down for smaller presents. Creased wrapping can be ironed flat. Ribbons and bows are easy to save and reuse.
• Recycle old electronics – New flat-screen computer monitors, laptops, cameras, cell phones and other electronic items are common holiday gifts. Older models which are being replaced are usually still in working order, however, and should not be discarded to a landfill. Here is information to help recycle these items: Recycling electronic goods
• Christmas trees can be recycled too – real trees that have been cut are a useful material for composting. Composting requires a carbon source and Christmas trees are just right for municipal operations which use chippers to shred the material. Look for tree drop-off locations in your neighborhood. Artificial trees which are up for replacement can also be recycled. These trees are usually made from twisted metal which is accepted by most recycling centers.

Note: Never burn Christmas tree branches in your fireplace. It can cause the buildup of creosote, which is a highly flammable compound.

Each year, 50 million Christmas trees are purchased in the U.S. Of those, about 30 million go to the landfill.

20 Ways To Live A Greener Life

1. Go green when cleaning – green cleaning products don’t harm the environment or your family, and offer a fantastic alternative to those harsh chemicals many cleaning products include. Biodegradable detergents and washing powders are easily available in supermarkets. Not only do these products not have those harsh chemical smells, they do a fantastic job at keeping your home clean and fresh! You can even use products you already have in your pantry to clean your home by simply mixing white vinegar with baking soda to make your bathroom tiles shine!

2. Swap plastic for calico! Calico or hessian makes for fantastic re-useable shopping bags, a great alternative to plastic. Not only can these bags be used a number of times you can make some up yourself for a small cost and customise them to suit your style!

3. Learn to preserve! Throwing out over ripe fruits and vegies is wasteful. Preserving, pickling and jam making are all easy to do and a great way to reduce waste. A great tip is to freeze over ripe bananas and turn them into a banana cake later on!

4. Try to limit your washing. Rather than doing lots of small loads of washing do a couple of big washes per week using cold water and environmentally friendly detergent. Try to wash on sunny days and hang your clothes outside in the morning to give them the best chance to dry under the morning sun, a simple tip that will not only help the environment but your electricity bill as well!

5. Invite pollinators to your garden. We are seeing a great decrease in natural pollinators in our environment. Invite bees and butterflies to your garden by planting bright flowers and plants such as Butterfly Bushes and Lemon Balm. These plants will attract these important bugs and lemon balm is great for cooking also!

6. Swap electricity hungry TV’s for games. Once a week bring your family together to enjoy a game of Scrabble or Jenga rather than sitting in front of the box, this is great bonding time and will reduce your energy usage.

7. Green toilet paper is readily available and will decrease your environmental footprint! Use toilet paper made from recycled products to stay eco-friendly. There are many different options available and most are inexpensive.

8. Before you leave the house in the morning close up! Keeping blinds and curtains shut for the majority of the day will ensure that your house stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter. When you arrive home it will be easier to heat/cool your house and as a result you will use less energy.

9. Recycle. You’ll be surprised at just what you can reuse in your home. Wine bottles make great water jugs when you peel off the labels, or pop a rose or two in for a beautiful table decoration. Glass jars can also be refilled with sauces and jams.

10. Grow your own! It is so rewarding when you can pick your own herbs and vegies and use them to create a meal for your family and friends. Plus you’ll rest easy knowing that they’ve been grown without chemicals.

11. Make your own beauty products at home. You can make many of your own beauty products at home with materials you already have lying around the house! Using honey, avocado, fruit, oil, eggs, yogurt and other kitchen necessities you can make most of your own hair products without ever stepping foot into a beauty supply store. Some of the best face masks come out of the supplies you have in the fridge!

12. Encourage recycling at work in a fun way. It’s easy to throw paper and notes in the bin under your desk. But you should have a separate bin for scraps of paper and cans of soft drink. Make it fun for the team by having bright coloured bins. Another great idea at the office is to start a friendly competition to see who prints the most unnecessarily. Collect the paper left at the printer at the end of each day and tally it up to name and shame at the end of the week!

13. Use your own coffee tumbler or thermos. Have you noticed all the bright and colourful reusable coffee cups available to buy now? Rather than getting a cardboard coffee cup every day, buy your own reusable mug to take back and forth from home to work. It’s a great way to make your coffee stand out from all the others at your local café and ensure no-one swoops in and picks up your coffee out of turn.

14. Try Organic Linen. Buying great quality linen is the ultimate indulgence; but this doesn’t mean it has to have a negative impact on the environment. Organic linen is readily available and the quality is often much better than regular linen. Cotton is a product that gets swamped in chemicals during the growing process, organic cotton is chemical free and long lasting. Organic cotton and bamboo linen can ensure even your bedroom lives greener!

15. Go on a green holiday. It’s possible to significantly reduce your carbon footprint when travelling, consider these tips next time you jet off! Look into a home exchange, hotels use huge amounts of energy and are extremely wasteful. Alternatively, try an ecofriendly hotel. Options are popping up internationally and are a refreshing change from the big hotel chains. Go solar, solar charges are available for phones, iPods, laptops and other electrical devices and are a great way to reduce your energy usage while overseas. Finally, use public transport or bicycles when travelling, this will reduce pollution and is a great way to experience a new place!

16. Getting married? Go green! Print your invitations on organic paper, use native flowers as centre pieces to reduce carbon emissions from imported flowers. Utilise cloth napkins to reduce the waste of paper, give eco gifts to guests as bonbonniere! Keep the menu totally organic – not only will your guests be impressed but you will be helping the planet at the same time.

17. Stay informed! There are so many amazing eco products available, sign up to eco newsletters and blogs to hear about new ideas. Who knew you could purchase stones to put in your shower which flash red when it’s time to get out!

18. Take your shoes off at the door. Shoes bring dirt, pollutants and chemicals into your home; 85% of dirt in your home is carried in on shoes! Leave them at the front door to reduce how frequently you vacuum and to rid your home of harsh chemicals, a simple tip with great rewards.

19. Take back clothes hangers to the dry cleaners. 3.5 billion clothes hangers are used annually in Australia alone, decreasing this number is simple! Return hangers next time you visit the dry cleaner, they will appreciate it and so will the environment.

20. Sign up for e-bills. Reduce paper by signing up to receive your bills by email, this reduces your paperwork and in some instances will save you money on paper bill fees!
